So Long, Summertime

Summer was a fling...sweet at first, but gone too soon.

When classes ended last March, I thought for sure that I would be stuck in the house all day since I had zero vacation plans.  A year ago, my college buddies and I went on a trip to Camiguin (which was absolutely stunning and had a very "provincial feel" which I loved), and a year before that it was Bohol with the whole family: papa, mama, and little sis.

So what's a girl to do on one of the most festive time of the year?

Sleep.  During the day.  Turning night into day is not the best idea, but well, it's the summer!

Just when I thought that I would be spending the whole three months in solitary confinement, invites started appearing from out of nowhere.  My once lonesome summer had turned into a blur of activities starting with:

A procession that marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus.  This is a very old Filipino tradition; however, the solemnity of the procession is sometimes broken by the faithful's, particularly the younger one's, devotion to chatter while prayers are being said.

A grand reunion with the different clans of my father's side of the family.  This was held in his aunt's beach-side place in Palompon where we also met actor turned politician, Richard Gomez.

In the historic 2010 elections (first time to cast ballots by electronic means), the Filipinos elected an Aquino whose capability and mental stability are still being questioned by critics.  The local politics was colorful as well:  Richard was disqualified by the Commission of Election for residency issues and was replaced by his Ormocana wife a few days before the election day.  Lucy eventually won by a large margin.

A ride on a habal-habal to reach this beauty that is hidden from the rest of the public.  While the other rivers in the area are already being developed, or corrupted might I say, this river remains untouched--but in a few years, dare I say, this river will be stripped of its natural beauty.  "Progress" is finding its way here.

A visit to a mountain resort somewhere in Albuera.  Soob has already become a popular destination for locals who like to get away from the city.  While progress is good, it is also cruel to the natural environment.  A pool now stands where there used to be trees and it looks like this mountain resort is still in the process of expanding.

Then there were graduations, and birthday, and fiestas, and a company outing...all in the month of May.

With the announcement of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's (PAGASA) announcement a few days ago that summer has ended and that we should prepare for the rainy season, I leave this summer behind with wonderful memories of days spent with friends and family as we endured the summer heat in our desire for a break.

Of course, the summer that was had its downside too, but I'd rather not include a sombre memory in my summer fling.

Yes, the summer was indeed a fling...sweet at first, but gone too soon.
